Antarctic pack ice algal distribution: Floe-scale spatial variability and predictability from physical parameters ArchiMer
Meiners, K. M.; Arndt, S.; Bestley, S.; Krumpen, T.; Ricker, Robert; Milnes, M.; Newbery, K.; Freier, U.; Jarman, S.; King, R.; Proud, R.; Kawaguchi, S.; Meyer, B..
Antarctic pack ice serves as habitat for microalgae which contribute to Southern Ocean primary production and serve as important food source for pelagic herbivores. Ice algal biomass is highly patchy and remains severely undersampled by classical methods such as spatially restricted ice coring surveys. Here we provide an unprecedented view of ice algal biomass distribution, mapped (as chlorophyll a) in a 100 m by 100 m area of a Weddell Sea pack ice floe, using under-ice irradiance measurements taken with an instrumented remotely operated vehicle. We identified significant correlations (p < 0.001) between algal biomass and concomitant in situ surface measurements of snow depth, ice thickness, and estimated sea ice freeboard levels using a statistical...

Huret, Martin.
Continental margins play a crucial role in biogeochemical fluxes between the continents and the open ocean. They are also highly sensitive to human perturbations. Primary production is highly dependent on the complex dynamics of these coastal zones, and on the river supply in nutrients, as well as in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) which limit light availability. The quantification of the production is a prerequisite in many applications, from the understanding of the role of the coastal ocean in climate change, to eutrophication and fisheries resources issues within the frame of the integrated management of the coastal zone. Coupled physical-biogeochemical models are useful in studying and monitoring primary production. Because of the numerous complex...

Assessment of Ba/Ca in Arctica islandica shells as a proxy for phytoplankton dynamics in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Doré, Justine; Chaillou, Gwénaelle; Poitevin, Pierre; Lazure, Pascal; Poirier, André; Chauvaud, Laurent; Archambault, Philippe; Thébault, Julien.
Despite its major role as a global climate regulator, little is known about the recent evolution of the North Atlantic Ocean, especially prior to the fifties, principally because of the lack of long-term instrumental data. Moreover, the North Atlantic Ocean is undergoing rapid changes at the physical scale leading to modifications at the biological scale increasing interest to monitor the environment. The phytoplankton is the base of the ocean life and its perturbation can lead to further changes in the food chain. Recording its dynamics implies to observe both its spatial and temporal variations. This study brings forward the use of the Ba/Ca ratio from shells of the long-living bivalve Arctica islandica collected in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean near...

Biological productivity enhancement over a continental shelf break (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) evidenced by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe.
During spring of 2005, satellite imagery revealed high sea surface chlorophyll a concentrations over the edge of a wide continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). As a descriptor of biological productivity, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase specific activity was measured in situ during the bloom. Notably high values were detected in the bloom area relative to other parts of the study area.

Characterization of phytoplankton biodiversity in tropical shipwrecks off the coast of Pernambuco, Brazil Acta Botanica
Santos,Douglas Henrique Cavalcanti dos; Silva-Cunha,Maria da Glória Gonçalves; Santiago,Marilene Felipe; Passavante,José Zanon de Oliveira.
The phytoplankton community was studied around two artificial reefs (shipwrecks Servemar-X and Servemar-I), located off the coast of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, aiming to identify and thus, better describe these environments. Water samples were collected with Nansen bottle at three depths (surface, mid-column and bottom) for chlorophyll a analysis and salinity; temperature and water transparency were also measured. To collect phytoplankton samples, a diver using SCUBA equipment carried out phytoplankton hauls with a 20 µm net around the shipwrecks, about 1.5 m from the bottom for approximatly 3 minutes. Chlorophyll a concentrations at the bottom varied between 0.61 and 5.97 mg.m-3, with an average that indicates a mesotrophic environment. Temperature...

Chlorophyll a spatial inference using artificial neural network from multispectral images and in situ measurements Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERREIRA,MONIQUE S.; GALO,MARIA DE LOURDES B.T..
Considering the importance of monitoring the water quality parameters, remote sensing is a practicable alternative to limnological variables detection, which interacts with electromagnetic radiation, called optically active components (OAC). Among these, the phytoplankton pigment chlorophyll a is the most representative pigment of photosynthetic activity in all classes of algae. In this sense, this work aims to develop a method of spatial inference of chlorophyll a concentration using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). To achieve this purpose, a multispectral image and fluorometric measurements were used as input data. The multispectral image was processed and the net training and validation dataset were carefully chosen. From this, the neural net...

Dynamics of spatial patterns of microphytobenthic biomass: inferences from a geostatistical analysis of two comprehensive surveys in Marennes-Oleron bay (France) ArchiMer
Guarini, Jean-marc; Blanchard, Fabian; Bacher, Cedric; Gros, Philippe; Riera, P; Richard, P; Gouleau, D; Galois, R; Prou, Jean; Sauriau, Pg.
Microphytobenthos plays an important role as primary producer in shallow embayments subject to a tidal regime. The present paper aims to characterize the spatial patterns of sedimentary chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass in 2 seasons in the wide intertidal mudflats of the Marennes-Oleron Bay (France); furthermore, it provides estimates of total microphytobenthic biomass. Accordingly, a systematic sampling scheme was performed in June 1995 and in January 1996. On average, biomass was higher in June (ca 120 mg chi a m(-2)) than in January (ca 85 mg chi a m(-2)). Moreover, the geostatistical analysis revealed that spatial similarities were propagated over larger distances in June (6 km) than in January (2.2 km). In order to account or this result, we suggest that...

Lannuzel, Reva.
Coastal zones represent key systems in biogeochemical cycle couplings between continents, oceans and the atmosphere transporting considerable amounts of matter, energy and nutrients (C, N, P et Si) from land to sea. Despite its relatively modest surface area (7 % of the global ocean surface), this zone accounts for 14–30 % of all oceanic primary production. The present study deals with nutrients and carbon dynamics during a full hydrologic cycle in 2017 over the terrestrial-aquatic continuum formed by the Poitevin Marsh-Aiguillon Bay- Breton Sound to better understand terrestrial export influence on the coastal zone. Carbon and nutrient concentrations were sampled twice a month over heterogeneous sites (estuaries, channels and coastal sites) to integrate...

Melo, Nayara Magry Jesus; Rosa, Rayete Sary-Eldin Gil; Pereira, Eduardo Gusmão; Souza, João Paulo.
Enterolobium contortisiliquum is a neotropical widespread species that occurs in native Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga vegetation in Brazil. Outside Brazil, it occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of high carbon dioxide concentration [CO2] on leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a fluorescence, growth, and biomass allocation among roots, stems, and leaves in young plants of E. contortisiliquum. After germination, twenty days old individuals of E. contortisiliquum were grown in open-top chambers (OTC) at two different [CO2] (400 ppm and 700 ppm). Physiological measurements were made when the plants had been grown in OTC for 170, 200, 230, and 260 days. The...

Growth and biopigment accumulation of cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis at different light intensities and temperature BJM
Kumar,Manoj; Kulshreshtha,Jyoti; Singh,Gajendra Pal.
In order to find out optimum culture condition for algal growth, the effect of light irradiance and temperature on growth rate, biomass composition and pigment production of Spirulina platensis were studied in axenic batch cultures. Growth kinetics of cultures showed a wide range of temperature tolerance from 20 ºC to 40 ºC. Maximum growth rate, cell production with maximum accumulation of chlorophyll and phycobilliproteins were found at temperature 35 ºC and 2,000 lux light intensity. But with further increase in temperature and light intensity, reduction in growth rate was observed. Carotenoid content was found maximum at 3,500 lux. Improvement in the carotenoid content with increase in light intensity is an adaptive mechanism of cyanobacterium...

Light absorbtion and maximum yield of photosynthesis during autumn phytoplankton bloom in the western Black Sea. IBSS Repository
Churilova, T. Ya.; Finenko, Z. Z.; Turgul, S..
In the frame of GEF/UNDP Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery Project the effect of nutrient availability on phytoplankton light absorption and maximum quantum yield of carbon fixation (фmax) has been investigated. It has been found out that chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) varied from 0.3 to 10 mg m-3 increasing from deep-water region to shelf waters. At the shallow stations, where upper mixed layer spread deeper the bottom of euphotic zone, the homogenous pigment distribution was observed. In the deep-water region the Chl a profiles showed the presence of a deep Chl a maximum (DCM) below a seasonal density cline. The functional characteristics of phytoplankton showed depth-dependent variation. The phytoplankton from DCM was characterized 20 % lower values of...

Spectral fluorometric characterization of Haptophyte dynamics using the FluoroProbe: an application in the eastern English Channel for monitoring Phaeocystis globosa ArchiMer
Houliez, Emilie; Lizon, Fabrice; Thyssen, Melilotus; Artigas, Luis Felipe; Schmitt, Francois G..
In this study, we examined the possibility of using the FluoroProbe for monitoring the dynamics of the Haptophyte Phaeocystis globosa in the coastal waters of the eastern English Channel. The FluoroProbe was recalibrated by recording a new fingerprint for P. globosa and the use of this new fingerprint was tested through a series of laboratory and in situ experiments. The annual dynamics of P. globosa estimated using the FluoroProbe and by flow cytometry were similar. A strong relationship was found between the FluoroProbe estimates of P. globosa biomass expressed in terms of chlorophyll a equivalent per litre (eq. mu g L(-1)) and flow cytometric cell counts (r = 0.889, P < 0.001, n = 121). The FluoroProbe can be used to detect the flagellated cells as...

The seasonal dynamics of nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations on the SE Mediterranean shelf-slope ArchiMer
Herut, Barak; Almogi-labin, Ahuva; Jannink, Natasja; Gertman, Isaac.
We report the results of a sequence of twelve research cruises over a two-year period, from June 1996 through May 1998 that examined the seasonal variations in the nutrient (NO(3)(-) PO(4)(3-), and Si(OH)(4)) and in the chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations at two permanent stations across the SE Mediterranean continental shelf and slope (120 and 400 m water depth off the Israeli coast). Seasonally-dependent Chl a concentrations ranged between 0.003 and 0.415 mg m(-3). Following autumn and winter a distinct biomass phytoplankton peak was produced (similar to 30 mg Chl a m(-2) in the upper 120 m) and a subsequent moderate spring peak was observed. In the decomposition zone (120-400 m), an opposite pattern was observed with decreasing amounts of NO(3)(-) and...

IBSS Repository

SeaWiFS. IBSS Repository
